Gladiators were damnati (condemned criminals), slaves and people who wanted to be gladiators who received money for fighting. Murmillon (used a helmet, shield and sword, they fought retiaritus), retiaritus (used a net with a trident or a dagger), samnite (used a sword, visor, helmet and shield) and Thracian (used a curved scimitar and shield) were types of gladiators. These fights were held in amphitheaters.
There were chariot races in which racers had supporters, occasionally supporters would even fight. Chariot races were held in U-shaped arenas.
